The main campus of Cornell University is on East Hill in Ithaca, New York, overlooking Cayuga Lake and the city. Since the university was founded, it has expanded to about 2,300 acres (930 ha), including most of the hills and surrounding area. The Central Campus houses many places like  laboratories, administrative buildings, and almost all of the campus’s academic buildings, athletic facilities, auditoriums and museums. North Campus is made up of ten residence halls that primarily house first-year students, although the townhouse community occasionally relocates students. The main five residence hall on West Campus makes the West Campus house system, along with a number of Gothic-style buildings, known as “Gothics” up. Between a mixed-use neighborhood of apartments, eateries, and businesses, College town includes two upper-level residence halls and the Schwartz Performing Arts Center. Construction has also begun on two new residential buildings that will be located on the northern campus, providing beds for an estimated additional 800 students, which will be completed by Fall 2021.

The main campus is marked by an irregular layout and eclectic architectural style, with ornate collegiate Gothic, Victorian and Neoclassical buildings, and more additional international and modernist structures. The more ornate buildings usually date from before World War II. In  1970, at a time when architectural styles favored modernity the Student numbers doubled from 7,000 in 1950 to 15,000 by  . While some buildings are neatly arranged in quadrilaterals, others are densely and randomly packed. These singularities arose from multiple, ever-changing master plans for the university’s campus. For example, in one of the early plans, Central Park designer Frederick Law Olmsted proposed a “grand terrace” overlooking Cayuga Lake.

Many of the university’s buildings are listed as historic sites. For more information you can Visit Cornell University – Wikipedia
